Archives for August, 2009

Today is August 31. This marks 31 straight posts. I learned a lot from this little experiment. I remembered how much I enjoy blogging and how much I look forward to it.
Tonight was also a special night because it was the first baby shower for Lil’ Geek. The shower was thrown by our Kiwanis Club and it was a wonderful experience. I’ve been in the club for five years now and many of the members are very close friends. It was also really great to see Mrs. Fitness Geek get all the attention. She was absolutely glowing.
Tomorrow I’ll do four in the morning and get back in the swing of hard training. Tomorrow night will be a busy one. I’m cleaning out the last bits of stuff from the nursery before I paint this weekend.
Lil’ Geek is going to love it. She’d better at least. It’s been a lot of work.

What a day in the Geek household. We spent the weekend cleaning up and clearing out the nursery, oh lil’ one.
I know your mom is excited to decorate. Of course, she’s always excited to decorate.
But for you, she absolutely can’t wait. I can only imagine the decorating the two of you will do together in a few years.
We’ve made room in the house for you, but the truth is we made room for you months ago in our hearts. Space was cleared out. Sad memories pushed aside. Thoughts of ourselves and our lives without you pushed under rugs.
All so that memories and thoughts of you would have a permanent place in our hearts and souls. There is no amount of paint, no decorations, wall hangings or matching bed sheets that can make your nursery anything like the room we have set up in our hearts for you.
That room, lil’ one, will change and grow as you do. Its colors will brighten and shimmer. The sounds will change volume and cadence. Your room in our hearts is yours forever. It will be colored with your own flair and personality.
I can’t wait to see what you do with the place.
Our hearts are yours and you are our everything.

Mrs. Fitness Geek was a bit sore today on account of her hauling around Lil’ Geek. So we took it easy and enjoyed the time off our feet.
I did get in a short run and I’ll get in another tomorrow. We watched “New in Town” and Mrs. Fitness Geek enjoyed it more, but overall, it wasn’t too bad.
Pizza for dinner. Is there a better food?
The cats have been taking turns napping with us. I guess the feline union is pretty strict on how many can curl up on the bed or couch with us at one time.
I still can’t seem to do too well at Bejeweled Blitz. Some day…

We got home tonight from dinner and I decided to read. This is a disputed point in our house. I say “read” and mean that I will lay down with a book, get through at least two pages and then the book will remain within arms’ length even if my eyes don’t always remain open.
Yet Mrs. Fitness Geek thinks this means I’m sleeping. She doesn’t understand that if the book is close enough to touch, I’m still technically reading… I’m just making slow progress.
Needless to say, tonight was a good night for reading. I read for two hours, yet only made it one chapter. I guess I’m a slow reader.
Tomorrow’s my first long run since the shin splints. I’m going on an easier course with very few hills. The ultra in November is fairly flat so I’m not concerned about not training properly. Besides, the plan is to move to hillier courses once I’m sure the shins are good and healthy.
Time to go read until the morning…

OK, not exactly. But I did run in the rain today a bit. I was headed to the park this afternoon when I saw the first drops on the windshield. I immediately decided that I was going to run. No matter what the weather.
The rain drizzled down off and on for all four miles, but outside of one slip in the mud I had a nice, strong, easy run.
The only downside was I forgot my watch and didn’t have a time of the full run. Oh well. No big deal. The important thing is that I start packing on the ol’ miles.
No run tomorrow, but I will do weights. I’m planning 10-12 miles Saturday. The shin seems good to go, so I think the only issue will be just how fast I can get into long distance running shape. Overall, I feel pretty fit and I’m confident the miles will come back as the days and weeks progress.
Is it the weekend yet?

I had a very late night last night. Very late. Even sleeping in this morning only got me four hours of sleep.
So I had to get my workouts in tonight, which I did in a big way: 60 minutes on the stationery bike and chest and back weightlifting.
Tomorrow morning will be an easy four miler in preparation for a long run on Saturday.
Mrs. Fitness Geek and I are all about Top Chef. The new season just kicked off and so far I’ve call the person to be eliminated.
It’s exciting to think we’re less than 100 days until Lil’ Geek arrives. I think about her often.
It’s bed time. Diz is stretched out on the mouse, so I’d better end this post.

Hooray! 99 days left until Lil’ Geek is expected to make her first appearance. Sure, the chances of her being on time are slim, but it’s fun to imagine that we’re in the double digits now.
On to the addictions!
1. Lifting - Second day in a row. That beats my most recent streak by two days. I’m enjoying it again, and that’s important.
2. Ultra training - Tomorrow is a run day and I’m planning four in the morning.
3. Lil’ Geek - Your mom is a bit upset about you using her bladder as a punching bag. You can keep punching and kicking, but try and aim away from the vital organs for a bit. Please?
4. Braves - A 1-0 loss to the lowly Padres. Terrific.
5. A. Lee Martinez - Possibly the best author I’ve discovered in a while. Gil’s All Fright Diner is a fantastic book. I’m on his second one In the Company of Orcs. If you’re looking for books off the beaten path, this is the way to go.

I got in a quick two miler this morning that finished with the second mile faster than the first. I believe that’s the first time that’s happened on this course.
I also worked out tonight, even if it was really late and a fairly short workout.
I realized over the weekend how badly I needed to start hitting the weights again. My goal is four days a week combined with the ultra training.
With just more than a month to my 30th birthday, I really, really want to be in better shape. I’m not planning on great shape or beach shape, just better shape. Once that happens, I can start to think about good shape. I know it’s a long road. I really do.
But I want this. I want to run an ultra this year. I want to be fit and healthy. I want to be where I’ve always wanted to be. So here we go.
One good day…leads to another…and another…

What a week, lil’ one. I spent half the days away from home and away from you and your mother.
I know this will be the case after you’re born, and I’m sure it’ll be tough for everyone, but I can promise you it will be toughest on me. I can’t imagine not seeing your smiling face every morning or hearing you make the little noises that I know you’ll make.
But I’ll do it, Lil’ Geek because in the end everything I’m doing is for you and your sweet mother. In life there will be so much that you won’t want to do. Cleaning your room, eating vegetables, spending time with me or your mom.
Too bad. That’s what life is about sometimes. You do the things you may not be looking forward to because it’s important to someone else.
You’ll have more than a few jobs in your life. I’m lucky in that I love mine.
Your first jobs you may not enjoy. Doesn’t matter. Work hard, complain little and strive to be better. You’ll be rewarded with better jobs, more money and a sense of accomplishment.
Hard work, lil’ one, is what makes the world go round. I’ll always work hard so that you have the best life possible.
Of course in exchange you’ll have to spend time with me, even when you become a teen.
Sorry. A deal’s a deal.
Our hearts are yours and you are our everything.

Finally. A day of meetings, lunches, more meetings and a plane ride is over. I’m tired. But glad to be home with Mrs. Fitness Geek and Lil’ Geek.
Tomorrow will be busy with a trip to a baseball game with the dads for a late Father’s Day gift. Once home I’ll work out and spend time with the family after being gone for a few days.
Mrs. Fitness Geek was almost as glad to see me as I was to see her. Almost.
Now, time for bed.
